Vicar's Page

We try hard to make Whittington Church a friendly and welcoming church to all who join us.  Our worship, while centring on the Eucharist aims to offer a variety of services to meet the wishes of a wide range of people.  As you will see from the “Sunday” page, we aim to have regular family or all age services for many of the major church festivals of the year and from time to time in between.  We also have a monthly Book of Common Prayer (1662) service of Matins on the third Sunday of the month and BCP Evensong at 6.30pm on the second and fourth Sundays of the month.  All morning services are at 10.00am.

Although we serve firstly the Parish of Whittington, like many of the centres of village life, we draw people from a wider area.  Many come to the church from the adjacent neighbourhoods of Worcester, and a few from further afield.

We are also glad to provide baptism, wedding and funeral services.  We are obliged to follow parish boundaries in our ability to offer these services.  This is legally binding in the case of weddings, but in all cases we follow the principle that the parish system offers you a church to serve you in the place where you live.  We have been granted a dispensation by the Bishop of Worcester in the case of weddings which means that anyone living within the areas of the four churches of the Worcester South east Team (Whittington, St. Martin’s, London Road, St. Mark’s on the Bath Road or Ronkswood) can be married at any of the four churches.  We do however encourage you to consider your local church first.  We operate similar guidelines for baptisms.

In the case of weddings, one of the two parties must live in one of the parishes or be a habitual worshipper at the church.  In other cases a long-standing connection with the church may make it possible for the service to take place at Whittington.

If you have any queries or wish to arrange a baptism or wedding (funerals are normally arranged through the funeral director) please contact, in the first instance, the Parish Secretary, Margaret Horsley.  She is available in the Parish Office at St. Martin’s Church (corner of London Road and Victoria Avenue, Worcester) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings (Saturday by arrangement) or phone 01905 358083, answer phone at all other times.

We look forward to welcoming you to Whittington Church and assure you of a warm welcome.  We will try to be as helpful as possible in meeting your needs.

Phillip Jones,
Vicar.
